Trump facing lawsuit over Capitol police officer who died of stroke the day after Jan. 6 riot

Former President Donald Trump is facing a lawsuit in connection with the death of a U.S. Capitol police officer the day after the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. 

The lawsuit, filed in D.C.'s district court by Sicknick's former girlfriend Sandra Garza, claims that Trump directly instigated the riot and that it "cost [Sicknick] ... his life." Sicknick died from a stroke the day after the Capitol riot; during the altercation he sustained chemical spray to the face as he tussled with rioters. 

The lawsuit notes that the medical examiner overseeing the case claimed that "all that transpired [on Jan. 6] played a role" in Sicknick's death, though the medical report ultimately did not make a direct connection between his Jan. 6 injuries and his death the following day. 

The suit is seeking damages of at least $10,000,000 for Sicknick's estate, for which Garza serves as the "personal representative."
