Disbarred lawyer gets 15 months in prison after throwing Molotov cocktail at NYPD car during protest

Disbarred lawyer Urooj Rahman, 34, received a 15-month prison sentence on Friday after pleading guilty to one charge in connection with her actions during a 2020 protest.

The District Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York announced the sentencing on Friday. The judge set Rahman's surrender date for Jan. 15, according to CNN. Rahman initially faced an indictment on seven federal charges, but ultimately pleaded guilty to just one.

Amid a chaotic demonstration in Brooklyn following the death of George Floyd, the Fordham Law School graduate tossed a Molotov cocktail into an empty New York Police Department vehicle. One witness said she "attempted to distribute Molotov cocktails to several other individuals and to incite them to use the Molotov cocktails in the course of the protests."

A Molotov cocktail is a makeshift weapon named for Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov that typically includes a breakable container of flammable material and a rag acting as a fuse.

Rahman, a Pakistani immigrant, previously worked a legal firm in the Bronx aiding tenants facing evictions.
