Alan Dershowitz on Trump indictment: 'It's just not a crime'

Harvard professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz said Tuesday that the unsealed indictment failed to articulate any sort of crime that was committed by former President Donald Trump. 

"In his [Bragg's] press conference, he mentions a couple of them, but they all relate to Stormy Daniels and other kinds of personal, sexual and other payoffs," Dershowitz said on the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show. "That's just not a crime. It's just not a crime."

Manhattan Attorney General Alvin Bragg held a press conference Tuesday soon after the Trump arraignment where he gave his reasons for going through with the years-long effort to push the case against Trump forward. 

Trump on Tuesday pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records and conspiracy related to his alleged role in hush money payments to two women. He's the first former president to ever face criminal charges and is expected to be released on his own recognizance.

Dershowitz also noted that there doesn't seem to be a victim in this case.

"Where's the victim here?" he asked. "Who was hurt? Stormy Daniels isn't the victim. Who is the victim here? And do you ever devote that much time and resources- a lawyer's time to such a victimless crime?"

He added that Bragg has a record of reducing the severity of victim crimes, but is doing the opposite in the case against Trump.

"He's reducing victim crimes repeatedly, from felonies to misdemeanors, and now he's trying to raise a victimless crime from a non misdemeanor to a misdemeanor and then to a felony," Dershowitz said.
