Update: Sen. Leahy was taken to hospital on Tuesday, but later went home

Sen. Patrick Leahy, the president pro-tempore of the U.S. Senate who on Tuesday was sworn in to preside over former President Trump's upcoming Senate impeachment trial, was taken to a hospital on Tuesday but has since gone home, according to a spokesperson. 

The 80-year-old Vermont Democrat is behind only Vice President Kamala Harris and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in the presidential line of succession.

"The Capitol Physician suggested that Senator Leahy go to George Washington University Hospital this evening for observation, out of an abundance of caution," Leahy spokesman David Carle said in a statement, according to reports. "After getting test results back, and after a thorough examination, Senator Leahy now is home. He looks forward to getting back to work."

In an earlier statement the spokesperson noted that Leahy had not been "feeling well."

"This evening, Senator Leahy was in his Capitol office and was not feeling well," Carle had noted in the earlier statement, according to reports. "He was examined in the Capitol by the Attending Physician. Out of an abundance of caution, the Attending Physician recommended that he be taken to a local hospital for observation, where he is now, and where he is being evaluated," the statement said.
