House Speaker Pelosi invites President Biden to deliver his first State of the Union on March 1
Biden informally addressed a joint session of the legislature last April
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has invited President Biden to on March 1 deliver his first official State of the Union address to a Joint Session of Congress.
In a letter to the president, the speaker wrote, "Indeed, this past year has been historic: with the life-saving American Rescue Plan, once-in-a-century Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and, soon, the truly transformational Build Back Better Act! In that spirit, I am writing to invite you to address a Joint Session of Congress on Tuesday, March 1, to share your vision of the State of the Union."
Biden has not yet formally accepted the invitation.
Last April, the president delivered an address to a Joint Session of Congress outlining his primary agenda as he began his presidency. The formal speech typically takes a look back at the accomplishments of the year and peers down the line into the year ahead and the legislative goals of the administration.
Biden will likely discuss the $1.9 trillion economic rescue package passed by congressional Democrats early in the year, as well as the so-called bipartisan infrastructure package worth close to $1 trillion that passed more recently. Still on the line are Democratic efforts to pass the president's Build Back Better agenda, as well as a voting rights package being pushed by left-leaning lawmakers.
The address last April was delivered to a limited audience due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. It is unclear how health considerations will impact this year's speech.
