GOP rep introduces resolution to condemn death threats against Nancy Mace over bathroom controversy
"The escalating threats of violence and death against Congresswoman Nancy Mace on social media and to her office are awful and completely unacceptable," Luna said in a statement. "This has become standard practice among those on the other side towards those they disagree with.
Florida GOP Rep. Anna Paulina Luna on Tuesday introduced a resolution that would condemn death threats levied against South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace over her proposed ban on transgender women using the same bathroom as biological women.
Mace claimed last week that she has received "dozens" of death threats from men online in response to the proposed bill. The resolution would forbid biological men from using bathrooms designated for biological women on Capitol Hill and other federal buildings, but it would not impact unisex bathrooms in those facilities.
Luna's resolution cited multiple death threats against the congresswoman, and condemned all threats of violence.
"The escalating threats of violence and death against Congresswoman Nancy Mace on social media and to her office are awful and completely unacceptable," Luna said in a statement. "This has become standard practice among those on the other side towards those they disagree with.
"Elected officials must be able to represent the values and policies their constituents sent them here to uphold—free from intimidation or fear for their livelihood," she continued. "Congress must stand united in unequivocally condemning all threats of violence against our colleagues."
Mace proposed the bill just days after Delaware Democratic Rep. Sarah McBride became the first openly transgender person to get elected to Congress.
