Bob Good promises to step down as House Freedom Caucus chair if he loses recount

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good privately told his fellow caucus members earlier this week that he would resign as their leader if he loses a recount for his district's Republican primary.

Good technically lost the primary to his challenger John McGuire last week, after the Virginia Board of Elections certified the election results. But the Virginia congressman is calling for a recount of the vote since McGuire only won by 375 votes.

The congressman said on Wednesday that although he hopes he will win the recount, he has prepared his fellow caucus members in case he has to leave Congress next year.

“I told the membership that if I didn't do well in my recount that I would step down as chair,” Good told Politico. “I think that would probably be in the best interest of the organization. … Just so that's not the story all the time.”

Good declined to state who he would support to replace him as chair, but said the Caucus's board has very strong and "capable" members that can fill his shoes. Some potential candidates that have surfaced recently are Reps. Andy Ogles of Tennessee, Chip Roy of Texas, Andy Harris of Maryland, and Lauren Boebert of Colorado, according to the outlet.

The comment comes after the Freedom caucus reportedly booted Ohio GOP Rep. Warren Davidson from the group earlier this week, after he publicly supported McGuire.
